Sky Otter formerly known as Bill Pfeiffer is the founder of Sacred Earth Network (SEN) which implemented leading edge visions for over 25 years. In that time, Sky made Russia a second home having traveled there 44 times assisting the environmental and indigenous movements through SEN. This has given him a rare cross-cultural perspective. He has also led hundreds of spiritual ecology workshops, including men’s and breath work.  He has 25 years of experience in Re-evaluation Counseling and Vipassana meditation, and has undergone extensive training with Siberian shamans. Sky has partnered with and designed experiential workshops with Joanna Macy, John Perkins, Llyn Roberts, Cathy Pedevillano, and John Seed. He has also spent much time in the US Southwest learning about Native medicine ways and the crucial importance of the petroglyphs and pictographs. His  book, Wild Earth, Wild Soul: A Manual for an Ecstatic Culture has been met with high acclaim.

Activism meets Mysticism

Many people ask me what propelled me to start down this unusual path in the first place. On June 12, 1982 I was fortunate enough to be kissed by grace. Activism met mysticism. Here is that story.

How I Operate In The Marketplace

Energy Exchange And Reciprocity

Wherever possible I work on a donation basis and always sliding scale. No one will ever be turned away for lack of funds. I advocate for returning to an economy of generosity where we truly take care of each other. One of the thorniest issues among Native peoples in the Americas (not in Siberia but that is another story) is how to compensate medicine people. If the ancient teachings and medicine are not—or should not be— for sale in a capitalist system, then how do medicine people pay their bills?

In my case I am not Native but I’m doing my best to pass on what I’ve been taught. I would like to expand what I do on the land in Putney VT (and elsewhere) and make it a real eco-spiritual home for any person who wants to walk in a sacred way. I want to continue to offer what I do in this way in the hopes that folks will not consider that “as not honoring my value”—a current meme in many spiritual circles. Think about my work as a great value at a level you can afford. How can you put a price on Earth and Spirit?

In the late 80’s I founded the non-profit organization Sacred Earth Network (SEN). We had a two pronged mission: 1) assist Soviet–and soon thereafter, post-Soviet — nature defenders to enter more powerfully into the emerging global environmental movement and 2) promote the philosophy and practice of deep ecology.

In the 1990’s we raised over a million dollars to help Earth activists from Minsk to Vladivostok and from Central Asia to the Caucasus. It was an exhilarating time of expansion and hope. Numerous Russian “Greens” considered our project of providing Internet access and other capacity building resources to be the best of it’s kind.

By the end of the 1990’s we were invited by indigenous leaders in Siberia to assist them with large scale land protection. They informed us that our assistance would be insufficient without a corresponding effort to help them restore their culture. This led to SEN’s Indigenous People’s Exchange between Native American and Native Siberian elders. See the video here. At this time SEN raised money and organized the 8th Fire Gathering which has continued ever since. I am most proud of these 2 projects.

After foundation funding dried up in the economic meltdown of 2008 I put my focus on the work that is the subject of my book Wild Earth, Wild Soul and is also summarized throughout this web site.

We are dreaming the world into being every moment. We are not victims of some pre-ordained, awful future built on fear but powerful "Creator-Beings" that can vision a more beautiful world. The choice is always ours.
